Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE)

Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE) is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is especially useful for individuals who particularly struggle with re-experiencing symptoms (i.e., recurring nightmares, flashbacks, and intrusive memories of a specific event that happened in the past). Many people describe these symptoms as feeling as though they are “re-living” the event.

In PE, I will assist you with gradually approaching trauma-related memories, feelings and situations. Understandably, people typically attempt to avoid anything that reminds them of their traumatic experience, but doing actually so reinforces their fear. By facing what has been avoided, you can decrease symptoms of PTSD by actively learning that the trauma-related memories and cues are not actually dangerous and you don’t have to avoid them.
